This is the second of five portraits I will post over the next few weeks. For those who missed the first one it is here http://blackdog.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Arvo_Part_001_/
A little bit more about the process...
...they are each listening to the same piece if music for piano called Für Alina by composer Arvo Part. I cannot see the sitter and press the shutter randomly 10 times whilst the short piece of music plays. This is the pick of the 10 shots for this particular sitter. Like I said before, not my idea, but I was curious to experiment and try it for myself.

I'm a big fan of Arvo Part: glad to find someone else who'se actually heard of him!
I love this idea: must ty it with 'Fields of The Nephilim'...
blackdog: Thanks Dave - I have a love of all things melancholic, so no surprises that I like his work ;o)
what an interesting and creative idea. I like this a lot.
blackdog: Thanks Scarlet ;o)
Great idea to photograph people listening to music. Not sure about the treatment of the image though.
blackdog: Yes - perhaps agree with you. Just that in order to get some coherence to the group of shots on different days I needed to normalise them somehow. If i repeat it I will be much more rigourous in my approach to the environemnt the photos are taken in.
Keep experimenting Mike: great stuff!
blackdog: Guaranteed Chris ;o)
I like these very much - they are a great departure from your normal style. It's always good to try something you are not familiar with - I must try it sometime! I would be interested to know about the process you used.
Ingrid
blackdog: Thanks Ingrid - happy to explain the ps steps, but don't forget it is a white backdrop with a white shirt. Would be good to do so more and move the idea forwards.
I really like the pose here. Nice treatment!
blackdog: Thanks Richard ;o)
I like this very much Mike, it even has an erotic feel to it.
Nicely done
blackdog: Thanks Tracy ;o)
awesome portrait. Odd, but that makes it so good
blackdog: Thank you Chantal, glad you liked it - a different approach for me ;o)
It is a great experiment, I like the way you have to really look at the picture, I will try to keep up with you during my vacation.
I love the faded 'print' don't know how to say it in an other way
blackdog: Thanks Astrid, faded is fine ;o) Vacation, that sounds good - going sailing???
Certainly draws me in to it Mike ... I'll view the whole series before making a valid comment.
richard
blackdog: No problem Richard - some of the interest is in how different sitters reacted to the music.
This feels like the beginning of a charcoal drawing, Mike...almost a figment of the imagination at this step.
blackdog: I wish my charcoal was as controlled as that ;o) Mine usually look like an explosion of coal dust ;o)
will have to turn the brightness down on my monitor Mike and have another look just blinded me
blackdog: Well I thought - if I am going to go hi key I might as well really go for it. ;o)
That is certainly an odd way to take pictures, but I like the results you have been getting very much. Have you tried this while looking to see how these shots compare to the random ones?
blackdog: Sorry if there is confusion, but these are all random - I use a shutter release cable and press 10 times in the 4 mins of music. I cannot see the sitter when I press and the sitter doesn't know when I will press so unless the poses are rigid it is totally random. Hope that clears it up ;o)
I like the style of portrait, will be keeping an eye on the rest of the series.
blackdog: Thanks Nigel ;o) another one next week.
Not familiar with Arvo Part so Ihave looked him up and am playing this music now.
Now these two pictures are starting to make some sense. The music is sublime and this picture is exactly how I would listen to it!
blackdog: Thanks Bill, knew I would win you over - now about that twiddling ;o) o
"Spiegel im Spiegel' Just found this on Youtube and it is lovely. I'm guessing you already know it, but if not have a listen!
blackdog: Thanks Bill, but yes it is on the same cd as fur Alina ;o)
It is a curious sort of experiment, one that seems to be working out remarkably well too.
quite a dreamy photo mike... I like it...
Well they are interesting, but if I'm honest, not really my cup of tea.
like the ideal, like the shot. Good job
blackdog: Sorry - just found the comment. Thanks chichi ;o)
